The shoe and component sector is one of the most productive jobs in Bahia. With qualified labor, supply of raw material and use of technology in processes and equipment, it comprises four segments: the footwear (leather or synthetic materials) industries; leather goods (bags, briefcases, belts, among others); tanneries; and the component industries for leather and shoe artifacts.

Bahia has its productive centers distributed in 50 municipalities, which contributes to the regional development of the state and the internalization of the investment. Comprised of more than 200 companies, the sector employs approximately 25,400 people (the 5th most employed state in the sector) and has a structured supplier chain with great potential to grow. In 2016, the leather-footwear chain of Bahia, generated approximately R $ 3 billion. (Sebrae, 2017)

The state is one of the great productive centers and exporters of the country, occupying the 6th place in the ranking of national footwear consumption (5.6%). It occupies the 5th place in the exports of footwear and components of the country and the 3rd place in the Northeast among exporting states.

The main destinations for Bahian exports and the volume sector in 2017 were Argentina (28.3%), Peru (17.4%) and Bolivia (7.2%). (Aliceweb, 2017)

The proximity of Bahia to the consumer market reduces transport costs, propitiating a movement of concentration in the state. In this way, we are a great productive center with big companies of the sector installed and still with high potential of attraction of other footwear factories.

The municipalities in which the footwear and components companies are mainly located are Jequié, Itapetinga, Vitória da Conquista and Alagoinhas.
