When it left the Rio-São Paulo axis and settled in Bahia, Ford broke the paradigm of the regional concentration of the automotive industry in the country. The complex represented an unprecedented transfer of technology to the region, promoted the insertion of Bahia as a player in the market automotive industry and attracted, by synergy, other companies in the sector - such as the tire industries. In 2017, Ford celebrated the milestone of 3 million vehicles manufactured in Camaçari, a historical fact that consecrates the complex as one of the most modern and productive in the world. We believe that the success of Ford's operations in Camaçari is the greatest incentive for attracting new investments and developing local suppliers.
The State of Bahia is strategic and essential for the productive process of Paranapanema. It is in the Port of Aratu that our raw material, the copper concentrate, which contains about 30% of the metal, arrives. Subsequently, the material is destined for our plant located in the municipality of Dias d'Ávila. The plant has the capacity to transform 280 thousand tons of copper per year. There, cathodes, wires and rebar are produced with 99.9% pure Caraíba copper. The materials manufactured in Bahia are marketed to various Brazilian industries, as well as to the foreign market, with trading in the London Metal Exchange, taking the name of Paranapanema and Bahia to the world. In addition, the products made in Bahia are sent and processed at the other two Paranapanema plants, one in the State of São Paulo and another in Espírito Santo, where they are transformed into tubes, bars, connections and laminates of copper and its alloys, among others . We have about one thousand highly qualified and engaged employees in Bahia. Within the premise of sustainability, rather than adopting industrial processes, the company invests in the humanization of employee attendance, improvement of the organizational climate, permanent improvement of its socio-environmental responsibility programs and support of local communities. As can be seen, Bahia has a fundamental role in the entire production chain of Paranapanema. We hope to strengthen this partnership so that the company can strengthen its bases, expand and strengthen its activities, without giving up its social and environmental values, contributing to the development of the State.
The Northeastern region has always been a priority for BASF in the country, and in Bahia, our company has been active for almost 40 years in the Industrial Complex of Camaçari. In 2015, our old amine plant gave way to the Camaçari Acrylic Complex: the largest investment in our history in Brazil and South America. Implementation of the project in Bahia was strategic for BASF, considering that the state has other chemical industries, is a booming market and has remarkable economic growth in many industries. In addition, the presence at the industrial pole brings us closer to major universities such as UFBA and technical training institutes, such as SENAI, which puts us in contact with a skilled workforce. Among other factors, Bahia also has several energetic matrices and our location at the pole brings us closer to the port of Aratu, our suppliers and customers.
Bahia is strategic for Enel in Brazil. Currently, it is the place of the country where we have the largest installed capacity, considering the projects we are operating and under construction. We manage about 1.3 GW of renewable capacity in the State both in operation and under construction, driven by the region's great wealth of clean energy sources. Throughout Brazil, we are contributing to the diversification of the energy matrix through renewable sources and implementing sustainable initiatives around our plants with the creation of shared value. Our team is proud to participate actively in the construction of this moment of energy transformation in Brazil and Bahia.
The decision to establish our plant in Brazil, particularly in Bahia, will be very important for consolidating our brand. Here, we will be able to better care for our customers’ and partners’ demands. With our new distribution center, we will be able to better supply the market with our products much faster. We have already obtained a good response, which indicates that we are on the right path.
I have had a plant in Bahia for 20 years. For us, this was the best decision of our lives because Bahia is the number one state in the Northeast, in addition to its proximity with the Southeast, the entire Northeast, the North, and the Center-West regions. We ship goods every week in all directions. And the time of delivery is much shorter because we are in Bahia, not to mention the issue of abundant workforce and its mild climate. Bringing a furniture hub to Bahia will greatly improve our lives: We are starting to have a much more skilled workforce and abundant products as well.
Since the early establishment of our units in Bahia – plant and distribution center – Grupo Boticário realized the great possibilities offered by this state in various aspects. Bahia has great entrepreneurial potential and here we have found the ideal conditions to create beauty by creating opportunities. We believe in people’s capacity to accomplish and have been reaching good results. From Bahia, we have been producing and distributing to 15 Brazilian states in the North, Northeast, and part of Center-West regions with excellence and agility. This is possible thanks to the strength of 700 employees with a Bahian accent that are already part of our team.
Tecsis is one of the world leaders in the production of wind turbine blades and has chosen Bahia to be a new expansion hub for its production. We chose this site for our new unit due to its proximity to the country’s main wind energy projects and easy access to two important ports (Aratu and Salvador). The Bahia plant will meet the growing demand of the Brazilian market, but in the future, it will also support Tecsis São Paulo units in additional export demands. The support provided by the Bahia State Government and the Camaçari City Hall have been important for the project, especially in terms of workforce training. In this first phase, we will have almost 1,000 employees but we expect to triple this contingent over the next two years, depending on the growth of the Brazilian wind energy market.
As a result of our succesfull partnership between Bridgestone and the people of Bahia, our Camaçari plant is a global reference. With the productivity rates we were able to obtain, we got rid of an unfavorable situation and our unit is now moving towards becoming one of the group’s most productive factories in Latin America. Over a decade, we produced here more than 23 million high performance tires for passengers cars and vans and I am sure that these ten years were just a beggining of a long and properous journey.
