OVERVIEW OF THE STATE
The state accounts for 4.1% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), the highest rate in the Northeast Region, according to data from the IBGE in 2016. In recent years, Bahia has been a major player in wind energy production in Brazil. With 102 parks in operation and installed capacity of 2,525 MW, the state is the leader in the volume of projects contracted in Brazil and is about to take the first place as the largest producer of energy.
Among the main agricultural products are cotton, soybeans, corn, cocoa, coffee and fruits such as banana, papaya, grape, mango and coconut. Bahia has the largest herd of goats in the country and the second of sheep. In mining, it is home to the municipality of Caetité, the only uranium mine operating in Latin America – which supplies the nuclear power plants in Angra dos Reis (RJ). In addition, Bahia is prominent in the production of bentonite, copper, mineral water, precious stones, silver, ornamental stones and blue granite.
Its very diversified and ample industrial park is made up of big companies of the main sectors of the economy, standing out in the automotive follow the FORD Automotive Complex; the Petrochemical Complex of Camaçari, the largest integrated complex in the Southern Hemisphere, also stands out the Landulpho Alves Refinery, the second largest refinery in the country, the Basf Acrylic Complex; Enel Green Power, leader in the development of renewable energy sources in Brazil; Continental Tires and Bridgestone / Firestone; Caraíba Metais, the main producer of electrolytic copper in the country, Bahia Pulp, the only industry that produces high-purity soluble pulp throughout Latin America and Deten, the only producer in the country of LAB – a basic raw material for the production of biodegradable detergents.
In the educational field, the State has sought to strengthen secondary and higher education, while also enhancing professional development for the labor market. In addition to public and federal universities, the state has private colleges. The vocational training centers and technical schools have the partnership of the State Government in the qualification and training of labor. The training takes place at a wide range of levels, from training to masters degree and doctorate in a wide range of areas.
The main tourist destination in the Northeast, Bahia has the third largest hotel chain in the country, especially the Costa do Sauipe Complex on the North coast. The National Park of the Chapada Diamantina, in the central region of the state, the Abrolhos National Marine Park, to the south of the state that gathers the largest variety of corals in the country. Its capital also has a rich set of urban and colonial architecture , standing out the Pelourinho, in the Historical Center of the city that was declared Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity by Unesco.
